Herbicide treatment

The application of a herbicide treatment in either a spray or stem injection method is the most commonly used and economical approach in domestic situations to control and manage Japanese knotweed.  Vale Knotweed Solutions offer a tailored treatment plan, known as a Knotweed Management Plan, to effectively control the spread of the plant and to ensure that the plant remains in a dormant state.  The treatment will be undertaken over several growing seasons with a period of monitoring to ensure that the herbicide treatment has been successful

Excavation and removal

To ensure that Japanese knotweed is removed from land, the most effective process is excavation and removal.  This method is a more intrusive approach, however excavation and removal does ensure that the plant is removed from the area.  The method of excavation is a preferred approach in commercial and construction environments where time scales are of importance and where the land is to be developed.  The Japanese knotweed will be removed by an excavator and the plant and soil will be disposed of as contaminated waste to a registered landfill.

On-site burial and membrane encapsulation

If space on the land permits, the Japanese knotweed and the surrounding soil will be excavated and then moved into an excavation of atleast two metres deep that is lined with weed proof membrane.  The plant and soil are encapsulated in the membrane to prevent further growth and the excavation is then backfilled.  The on site burial is more cost effective than the excavation and removal process as the plant and the surrounding soil that is classed as hazardous will remain on site rather than be removed and deposited at a registered landfill.
